Educational Opportunity Center

The mission of the
Manhattan Educational Opportunity Center (MEOC) is to assist people
who meet certain income requirements achieve their educational and
employment goals. The Center offers high school completion and
college preparatory coursework, as well as other services.
CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT (CNA)
This is an eight-week
program designed to provide students with the fundamental skills and
knowledge required for an entry level position as a Nurse’s Aide.
Students will be trained to pass the New York State Nurse’s Aide
Competency Exam to become certified. Topics include clinical and
laboratory instruction, personal care, special patient care,
medication, exercise and rehabilitation, record keeping, nutrition,
anatomy and physiology, care of geriatric patients, etc.
MICROSOFT OFFICE SPECIALIST (MOS)
The Microsoft Office
Specialist Program prepares individuals with basic computer literacy
skills necessary in the workplace. Students learn Microsoft Word,
Excel, PowerPoint and Access.
PC REPAIR (PCR)
The PC Repair Program
prepares students to become competent entry-level computer service
technicians with the equivalent of 6 months of experience. After
training is completed, anyone who wants an internationally
recognized credential as a computer service professional MUST take
the A+ examination which is sponsored by Comp TIA and is backed by
major computer hardware and software vendors, distributors,
resellers and publications. The course consists of objectives and
skills covering computer core hardware and computer operating system
technologies.
SECURITY OFFICER TRAINING (SOT)
This program calls for
Educational Admissions Testing of each candidate and Vocational
testing to determine their suitability to train as Security Guards.
After the interview and selection process, candidates receive
instruction and Certification in CPR/Adult Life Saving (optional); 8
hours Pre-assignment Training as Security Guards; Preparation for
the NYCFD Certificate of Fitness as Fire Coordinator or Fire and an
Introduction to Investigate Memo Writing.
COLLEGE PREPARATORY (CP)
The College Preparatory
Program is designed to meet the needs of under prepared and
non-traditional students who wish to attend college. Classes consist
of a minimum of fifteen hours per week of instruction, five hours in
each of the areas of critical reading, college writing and
mathematics.
GENERAL EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT (GED) PREP
The General Educational
Development (GED) Program is designed to prepare students to take
and pass the GED and to prepare for admission to other programs
either at EOC or at other institutions. The program is designed to
allow individualized placements based on students’ needs. A special
accelerated class, called GED review, will enable some individuals
to complete training in ten (10) weeks and sit for the GED exam.
ACADEMIC PREPARATION
(AP)
The Academic Preparation
Program (Basic Education) is designed to develop competency in basic
reading and math skills. Successful completion of the Basic
Education Program may enable a student to enter the GED Program,
College Preparatory Program and the Business Education Programs
providing his/her reading and mathematics skills improve
sufficiently to satisfy these program requirements.
ENGLISH-AS-A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
The English-As-A-Second
Language (ESL) Program develops verbal proficiency in the basic
skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing.
FINANCING YOUR INDEPENDENCE (FYI)
FYI provides low income
and other New Yorkers with the knowledge and skills needed to
improve their financial well-being. During the course of 18 hours of
training, participants learn, among other things, how to manage
checking accounts, reduce high interest credit and improve their
credit standing.
WORK READINESS CREDENTIAL (WRC)
This program teaches
students critical employability skills necessary to succeed in
today’s workplace, while preparing them for the Work Readiness
Credential Exam. Topics include: communication, interpersonal,
decision-making and life-long learning skills.
